British Values at Hollywell

At Hollywell Primary the children enjoy a rich, inclusive curriculum that is enjoyable, exciting and well matched to children’s needs so that they are appropriately challenged.

The learning we have planned in each year group ensures that the requirements associated with the National Curriculum are fully met and often exceeded. We work hard to ensure that these learning experiences are inspiring, creative and engaging because we recognise the importance of ensuring that learning is purposeful and relevant to our children’s lives. Wherever possible, opportunities to use and apply learning in a meaningful context are regularly provided.

Our GROWTH values and enriched curriculum, promotes the development of vital life skills that will ensure our children are well placed to do well in the next phase of their education and beyond. Relationships are key to our GROWTH values and the ethos of our school.

The values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs are promoted across the school through the delivery of our curriculum, assemblies and specific sessions to develop pupils’ social and emotional understanding through the following ways:

Democracy

Children have many opportunities for their voices to be heard.   They are always listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and with concern to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard.

Children also have the opportunity to air their opinions and ideas through our School Council. The elections of the School Council members are based solely on pupil votes, reflecting our British electoral system and demonstrating democracy in action.

The Rule of Law

The importance of laws, whether they are those that govern the class, the school or the country, are consistently reinforced. We have three learning behaviours (rules), which are embedded in our school:

  • Ready

  • Respectful

  • Responsible

Our children are taught the value and reasons behind the learning behaviours, that they are our way of life and there for our well-being, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when these are broken.

Individual Liberty

At Hollywell, children are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. We educate and provide boundaries for our children to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and an empowering education.

Our children are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised how to exercise these safely; examples of this can be seen in our e-safety and PSHE lessons.

Mutual Respect

We teach weekly PHSE lessons using our own school scheme of work.  The pupils know and understand that it is expected and ensure that respect is shown to everyone, whatever differences we may have and to everything, however big or small.

The ‘Respectful’ learning behaviour rule at Hollywell underpins our work every day both in and out of the classroom. We expect all members of the school community to treat each other with respect.

Tolerance of Those With Different Faiths And Beliefs

At Hollywell we recognise the importance of ensuring that our pupils have frequent opportunities to learn about the diversity seen in the wider community and world.

Assemblies are regularly planned to include stories and celebrations from a variety of faiths and cultures.  Our teaching of RE and PSHE also supports this and we use a range of texts to promote diversity. Through this, our children gain an enhanced understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society.
